Can US doctors treat patients in Canada?
US doctors are not licensed in Canada and cannot prescribe medications for patients in Canada. However if you have a primary care doctor or an internist in Canada, a United States doctor can collaborate and send a consultation to your doctor in Canada with treatment recommendations. In our experience most primary care doctors, neurologists and internists in Canada have been happy to collaborate with us to provide psychiatric care for patients.
When might I need a Psychiatrist Second opinion Consultation?
In most US states a patient has to see a doctor in the office at least once to prescribe controlled substances such as stimulants, anxiolytics and certain seizure medications. It is important that you see your psychiatrist or Neurologist in at least once in person. We will also need to collaborate with your doctor in Canada in case you need refills or follow up care. Most Canadian doctors are happy to refill prescriptions once they see that the patient is stable, improving, and they have received an appropriate psychiatric evaluation.
Can I cross the US border and receive medical treatment?
You can cross the border and receive treatment in states where we are licensed. You can pick up prescriptions from a US pharmacy which are sent remotely. Popular destinations for medical tourism are New York, California and Florida. We are also licensed in Tennessee, Illinois, New Jersey and South Carolina.
Even if you cross the border to receive treatment, we still insist that you have a doctor in Canada to ensure that you receive appropriate care. It is important that you have a doctor who can prescribe for you in case of emergencies or if you need a medication adjustment.
What if I need an in-person appointment?
Most of the time ‘in-person,’ patient appointments are in in New York City. There are direct flights to New York City from most Canadian international airports. Please give us advance notice before you come to see us. As well as scheduling your appointments, we may be able to assist you to find a hotel, and other local specialists. We may also ask you to have your lab work done in Canada before coming to save time and costs.
Can a US psychiatrist perform psychiatric evaluations for court?
When completing evaluations for court, an employer, or for disability, the US physician is acting as an ‘expert witness.’ The purpose of the evaluation is not to provide clinical treatment, although treatment recommendations may be included. For instance, recommendations may include return-to-work accommodations.
Although Canadian courts do accept US Board Certification for expert witness testimony, it is important to tell your attorney that your psychiatrist, acting as an expert witness is located in the United States before starting work.
