What is ADHD?

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that interfere with daily functioning and development. People with ADHD struggle with maintaining focus, organizing tasks, and managing time. These challenges are deeply rooted in brain networks involved in attention, functioning, and self-control. ADHD can often begin in early stages and can continue into adulthood, impacting academic, occupational, and social life.

What is ADHD Testing?

ADHD testing is a thorough scientific method to examine if an individual exhibits symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). ADHD testing helps determine the severity of the symptoms.  DSM-5-TR classified ADHD as a neurodevelopmental disorder that results in severe neurological impairments in children. Adults may also show symptoms of ADHD, but this doesn’t worsen over time.

Goal of ADHD Testing

The goal of ADHD testing is to determine the severity of the symptoms and to understand if the individual struggles to function day to day. While testing, the symptoms must show inappropriate levels of hyperactivity, impulsivity, poor working memory, and deteriorated decision-making. The symptom diagnosis is based on the diagnostic manual of DSM or ICD.

Computerized ADHD Tests

Several standardized ADHD tests are available. These tests consist of self-report questionnaires and objective cognitive scales. The goal of the tests is to determine if the individual exhibits the symptoms of ADHD. The available standardized tests are valid and reliable to provide accurate results. The report measures if the individual is able to focus during the entire course of the test. The test checks the components of working memory, and it shows the level of impulsivity and decision-making.

Online ADHD Test

When searching online, you may find various third-party websites that offer quick ADHD screening. However, these tests will provide basic general scores, these tests can never replace an in-depth clinical evaluation and testing. It is always reliable to find a proper telehealth platform and get a consultation with a licensed board-certified mental health professional. They are specialised in ADHD Testing, and assessments are conducted under supervision...Read More

Psychiatrists and psychologists rely on validated, computer-based, and evidence-based ADHD screening tools such as:

  1. QB CHECK – An objective computer-based test used by clinicians. The tests have high test-retest reliability and excellent validity. Thus, the reports are widely used for diagnosing and monitoring ADHD.
  2. The Conners Test for ADHD – Conners produces criterion-based tests for ADHD.  The tests are highly reliable with a consistency score of 0.90 and a diagnostic accuracy of 0.92.
  3. Vanderbilt ADHD Diagnostic Rating Scale – These screening tools are often used among children and adolescents. The tests assess concerns across several criteria, such as academic performance, impulsive behaviour, etc.

An ADHD assessment provides a report based on statistics and evidence of symptom severity. ADHD testing on its own is not sufficient for the diagnosis. It is important to consult a certified psychiatrist/licensed clinical psychologist/nurse practitioner. Practitioners can solely provide clinical diagnoses, and when combined with ADHD testing, this serves as valid documentation of ADHD...Read Less

General ADHD Symptoms

ADHD symptoms are often subtle and remain hidden most of the time. The elementary school teachers and parents must be educated on the signs and symptoms of ADHD. The mild to moderate symptoms are not to worry about, but as the studies have shown, this will affect the developmental life of a child. Thus, ADHD testing must be practiced often after detecting a mild sign.

ADHD testing finds the symptoms and checks how they affect daily life. The symptoms of ADHD must have a major impact on one or more areas of functioning, such as:

  • Schoolwork
  • Social interaction
  • Work productivity
  • Time Management

The symptom criteria may vary when the child is at home during the early years, and once they are enrolled in school, they may learn and evolve better. It is important to interview the caregivers and get the child’s history.

The human brain is believed to develop fully by the mid- to late 20s. Thus, obtaining an appropriate diagnosis during early development leads to more accurate outcomes.

Adult ADHD Testing

An adult ADHD test looks for signs and symptoms according to the diagnostic manual. The severity measure varies from that in childhood. Thus, when it’s diagnosed during adulthood, the symptoms may not show much severity. ADHD with severe symptoms is very general and may affect day-to-day life, thus it is never unnoticed in childhood. Thus, in 80% of adult ADHD tests, individuals may have a prior childhood diagnosis. The other 20% of adult ADHD testing shows mild to moderate severity.

Individuals with ADHD can take more than one ADHD test. Instead, it involves checking various places to determine if someone has ADHD symptoms, how long they persist, and how they make it hard for them to get things done. The DSM-5-TR adds that there must be documentation of symptoms that last a long time, make living harder, and show up in more than one place. This is what the test is based on.

ADHD Testing in a Clinical Setting

A clinical interview is a key part of figuring out if someone has ADHD. As part of this method, ADHD specialists look at the person’s developmental history, when their symptoms started, how well they do at work, and what they’re worried about right now. We pay special attention to any problems with attention or executive functioning that the person had as a kid because ADHD is regarded as a developmental condition. When possible, retrospective self-reports, school records, and other evidence are often utilized to support the concept that symptoms started early...Read More

The objective testing contributes to the high validity of the test results. Answering one or two questions incorrectly may or may not affect the overall result. Each sign or symptom is evaluated with quantifiable data, contributing to measuring attention, impulsivity, and life activity.  Several components are used together to compute the results, such as

ADHD is a neurological disorder that usually starts while a person is a child. It is marked by levels of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that are not right for the child’s age, which makes it hard for them to do well in school, get along with others, and behave. Testing children for ADHD is done to see if the symptoms are common, long-lasting, and affect their performance in many areas of life.
The exam follows the DSM-5-TR’s rules for making diagnoses. A very significant factor involves the symptoms needing to be consistent for at least 6 months; additionally, the symptoms must occur in additional settings (home and school), and the severity of symptoms must cause clinically substantial impairment. Insurance Coverage depends on the insurance plan and the state you reside in. Most Insurance covers mental health care, which may include ADHD evaluation and testing. Before

scheduling your appointment, it is recommended that you contact your insurance company and confirm the insurance benefits. Clarify the coverage plan, required documentation, and then coordinate with your ADHD provider

Is ADHD a form of
mental retardation?

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is not a form of mental retardation. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that does not influence general intelligence...

The brain dynamics primarily relate to executive function and sustained attention and do not decrease learning or reasoning.

ADHD and intellectual disability may coexist, but they have different diagnoses with different meanings. People with ADHD are often intelligent and successful if they are able to control their attention and impulses. An intellectual disability means that someone has more general difficulties with learning and applying skills in daily life. At GABA, our board-certified psychiatrists analyse the symptoms and create a personalised treatment plan that helps the individual to perform better in day to day activities.

What is the difference between
ADD and ADHD?

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are the same. Professional diagnoses follow the nomenclatures

basedon the diagnostic manual. Currently, the Mental health professionals refer to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) by the APA and the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) by the WHO; both manuals now use the term “ADHD” for diagnosis.

Does Caffeine Make People with ADHD Tired?

In many cases, it is noticed that individuals with ADHD sometimes find that caffeine calms them down or makes them feel tired...

An ADHD-type brain looks for stimulation, and caffeine is a possible mild stimulant that balances activity without causing overstimulation. For an individual with ADHD, consuming caffeine can reduce their nervousness, making them feel more balanced. This resulting, relaxation could be perceived as feeling more peaceful than tired.

However, it’s important to understand that caffeine is not a treatment option for ADHD. Its effects can be inconsistent, short-lived, and may disrupt sleep or increase anxiety in certain individuals. At GABA Telepsychiatry, we believe the best way to evaluate whether or not you have attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) is through both organizational testing and a clinical evaluation. Self-medicating can lead to long-term issues if underlying conditions are not identified; therefore, we encourage you to pursue a complete psychiatric exam to receive the best possible care. The treatment goal is to allow an individual to maintain constant focus and find emotional balance, rather than just provide a quick burst of energy.

How does ADHD testing work?

The ADHD test is a detailed evaluation conducted by a licensed board-certified psychiatrist or a clinical psychologist. ADHD testing includes a clinical interview, followed by

collecting all the relevant history, such as treatment history, developmental history, and mental status examination. If the ADHD test is conducted for a child, then the input from caregivers or teachers is important. Lastly, the ADHD specialists administer a standardized computer-based ADHD test. Thus, combining all the collaterals, the provider will provide their expert opinion, diagnosis, and treatment recommendations

Is ADHD inherited from the mother
or the father?

ADHD can be inherited from either parent, not just one, because both parents contribute to the genetic component of the child. Studies have shown that having ADHD is highly heritable,..

meaning genes do play a large part in risk, with an estimated heritability percentage anywhere between 60% and 80%. This does not make it possible for one “ADHD gene” to be passed down; rather, several genes all contribute. A child gets half of their genes from their mother and half from their father. Therefore, the genetic importance of both parents cannot be understated.

Family history is very important; if only one parent has ADHD, the risk is increased for the child; if both parents have it, the risk further increases. Other factors that are not genetic- such as complications in pregnancy, illnesses during early childhood, exposure to lead, and psychosocial stress- can determine symptoms. Some research discusses parent-of-origin effects or epigenetics; however, these concepts do not change the basic fact that the usual process of inheritance involves contributions from both parents. If your family has a history of ADHD, ensure to state this during evaluation since it forms very useful clinical information.

Will ADHD medication show up on a
drug test?

Yes, ADHD medication shows up on a drug test. Stimulants like Adderall and Ritalin show positive results on amphetamine. With higher doses and frequent use, amphetamines

are detectable in urine tests up to 3 – 4 days. Thus, if you are scheduled for a drug test, it is important to carry valid proof of an ADHD prescription and inform the testing authority of your last dose and prescribed dosage in advance.
